How do water and pressure work while diving?

Pressure is a main concept regarding diving, and all those who practice this activity should be familiar with it and the way it affects them. Water and pressure produce effects on each other as well as on divers and there are some main aspects of them which divers should know.

First of all, you should be aware that water and pressure have a reciprocal effect similar than air and pressure. While air pressure decreases with altitude, water pressure decreases with depth. This means that the deeper we go into the water, the higher the water pressure and its effects will be on us.

Besides, it is also important to have in mind the fact that your body air spaces become reduced while pressure increases. This way, when you are at 1 atmosphere of pressure or ATM such air volume turns into a half, or if you are at 3 ATM it turns into a third of its regular volume.

On the other hand, the density of the air of your body spaces as well as your scuba tank also varies while water pressure increases and you go deeper into the water. This way, while you are at 2 ATM this density is the double than it was at 1 ATM or while you are at 3 ATM it is three times what it was at sea level.
