Poor Knights Islands is one of the main diving destinations of New Zealand. This area is known among divers due to the great amount of marine life it contains which is characterized by its uniqueness and beauty. Besides the marine life, this area is also world wide known due to the amazing reefs and sea formations it offer for divers to explore.

The Poor Knights Islands are located at about 30 km from Tutukaka Harbor, in the place known as Whangarei. This is the place from which divers must departure in order to reach the Poor Knights Islands and where they can find several boats available to take them to this destination.

There are several tunnels, arches, caves, cliffs and reefs distributed along the Poor Knights Islands and offering many different interesting activities for divers to practice and places for them to explore. Underwater environments are as varied as the rock formations which surround them and all these spots are worthwhile to be visited since they all offer something new and different.

There are steep cliffs which divers who like to practice cliff diving would surely enjoy. These cliffs go about 100 meters below sea level and are usually surrounded by beautiful fish and marine creatures of different types. Besides these marine creatures, these cliffs often also contain beautiful corals which divers can observe along with the other interesting elements surrounding them.

Other of the main attractions that Poor Knights Islands offer to divers is its gorgonian fields and sponge gardens. These areas are full of shellfish, anemones, urchins, fish of all types and even some black corals can be found sometimes as well. This way, these areas offer unique and exotic underwater spots which amaze all divers who meet them.

Novice divers can find suitable diving spots where to observe exotic fish while practicing safe diving. Among the areas recommended for novice divers there is the spot known as Nursery Cove and some other spots spread around the South Harbor as well. Experienced divers can find many different spots where to have fun and meet interesting underwater sceneries at many points of the islands.
